The first half of this is set in Pizzeria del Golfo, where my parents used to get pizza often back before I was born.  The place was still there, but under different management (naturally).
The second half is a dessert shop in Heidelberg, where Dad was stationed.  The most bizarre of the dishes was spaghetti ice cream, which is extruded through a strainer of sorts.
