2005-04-21: Last Minute Housecleaning

Throughout the past few weeks, I've spent even more time than usual on house cleaning. That was due to the fact I'm expecting the dual terrors of my grandparents coming to visit my new place tomorrow for the first time, and my girlfriend Texie coming to CA tomorrow and seeing the new place for the first time. If that weren't enough on its own, both events were scheduled to happen on the same day.

Craig came by today, so we could work on the bathroom and kitchen floor projects. He arrived a bit after I'd started work on the lawn and driveway area. I managed to find bricks and asphalt that I never knew I had before, thanks to the slow encroachment of my lawn's grass. Pics will be uploaded later, but the long and short of it is that there's a lot more definition and lines around the house. The outside is gradually looking quite a bit better; no, I haven't had a chance to take pictures of it yet. I still need to get a chance to put up the trim that got torn off with the front porch roof (pictures here).

Craig managed to finish removing the bathroom wall as I was finishing up the front walkway. During the process, he discovered linoleum tiles behind the shower wall. I'd actually like to go back to that look rather than the chintzy looking (and un-repairable) plastic shower wrapper thing that's there right now. We did a bit of woodwork there, improving the support infrastructure in place behind the wall, and then switched to the more visible issue: the huge gaping hole in my floor under the linoleum floor. When your grandparents come to visit, the last thing you can make a good impression with is "There's no floor here, step OVER this huge uneven spot so you don't plummet through the linoleum to your doom."

I learned later on in the evening that there will, in fact, be no actual grandparent inspection tomorrow; there may not even be one at all. There is, however, still a Texie inspection, which means that this still needs done.

In unrelated news, Constantine was hungry enough to eat three snails tonight. The first two were at once, and provided significant amusement. He took a bite at one snail and left it wounded, then attacked the second snail and devoured it. Somehow, during the process of his eating the second snail, the first snail climbed up on top of his head. This resulted in a very upset turtle trying vigorously to shake the snail loose. It was like a snail-on-turtle rodeo. The similarities ended when the snail was thrown... a bull may choose to maul its rider, but Constantine actually ate the snail. Later on in the evening, I ran across a large snail while tossing some garbage, and Constantine ate it as well. He seems to be developing a better appetite every week. Either that, or he's starting to really like snails.
