|Welcome to Mr. Newton's Neighborhood|
This is a journal, not a blog.
The differences are as follows:
- You don't need to know what music I'm listening to - in fact, I rarely do
listen to music. Furthermore, if my mood is not apparent from my writing, it's
irrelevant. Lastly, should I post links to quizzes or my answers to said
quizzes more than, say, once a quarter - you, the reader, have my permission
and encouragement to hunt me down and shoot me with my very own Desert Eagle.
And make it the 50 cal.
- I won't be whining about emotional reactions to personal matters which are
irrelevant to the audience. You may hear about widespread apocalyptic
devastation applied to my house, but only if I have cool pictures or think
the story is amusing / informative. And while I have dreams of achieving a
Dave Barry kind of humor here, I have no illusion that I'm going to manage it.
- An adjunct and reinforcement to point #2: I will not whine about or even
mention personal drama between friends. I particularly will not whine in
my journal, about online personal drama going on in other
journals. This is why I refuse to call this a blog: blogs are whine amplifiers,
spreading the meme of whining throughout an entire network of peers. Like
chain letters, blog drama dies if you don't pass it on.
- I am going to chronicle the gradual home improvement process, the
acquisition of various random cruft, interesting discoveries usually made in
Linux, and a fair amount of gun info. Mostly, this journal is to show I'm
doing something with my time. What I will not be doing is deciding that I'm a
'news portal' and repeating news which you can get in better detail elsewhere.
The signal:noise ratio on the internet is bad enough already.
- The goal here is to let my family and friends see what's going on in my
life. The average blog surfer who actually enjoys reading a twisted
internet hybrid of soap opera and reality TV will hopefully be bored
senseless. On the other hand, I hope some entries get indexed by Google,
Yahoo, etc so that folks looking for answers I was looking for earlier, will
find them more easily.
- I may, some day, set up commentary capabilities. In the meantime though,
if you know me, you probably know my email address. Use it.
- Unless it directly impacts something worth writing about, you are not going
to know if I'm sick, injured, etc. That constitutes Whining (tm).
For quite some time now, I have mostly been spending my online writing time
creating articles for TheGunWiki, as
opposed to writing essays on my own individual guns. While it lacks the
personal touch of chronicling guns which are explicitly my own, I do find
a degree of gratification writing informational articles for the public at
large. Particularly with the amount of traffic that's been going on lately!
