2005-03-20: Constantine the Turtle

It's been decided that Constantine would be a good name for the turtle. He exorcises snails from their shells, and sends them back to whatever afterlife they escaped from. Speaking of which, during grandmother duty today it was determined that I'm going to start picking something other than oranges: snails. Snails from a farm, where they haven't used slug bait in years. Constantine loves it.

On the other hand, I've learned that there are carnivorous snails which will eat other snails. If it weren't for the fact that these guys don't get very large, I'd consider buying one as a pet, particularly if it had some spectacular means of dispatching its prey (like sea snails, with their lances). However, their mechanism of eating other snails is pretty unimpressive, and all I'd be doing is introducing competition for Constantine. Maybe later, when I know for sure that he's not going to totally decimate the wild snail population around my trailer. Of course, there's always Aunt Merle's.

At any rate, I woke up and categorized the overflowing box of computer cables according to what the cables actually do, and then put said cables into the little drawers under my closets. Those things really need to be on some sort of track, but maybe that can be another project. I'm seeing parts of the floor in my room which I have never seen before, and that impresses me.

Later in the evening, John and Craig decided Constantine needed a bath, then that there needed to be more of a contest to his feedings than simply dropping a nice big snail in front of him. The thoughts of an obstacle course have been brought to mind, and what we're working up here is essentially The Running Man for snails. We're still trying to get a good photo set and video of the snail ingestion process.
